The verdict

Wylde Green Florist has been family run at the same Birmingham Road address since 1984, which makes it one of the ten longest-serving shops in this guide and the second oldest in Sutton Coldfield. Forty-two years is long enough to have supplied flowers for the weddings of people whose parents' weddings it also supplied, and in a settled suburb like Wylde Green that is the actual business model. The opening hours are the most idiosyncratic thing about it and worth writing down: nine to half past five on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, but nine to five on Wednesday and Saturday. Half-day-adjacent Wednesday hours are a survival from an older pattern of high street trading and you almost never see them now. It is a small thing that tells you a lot about the kind of shop this is. The offer is contemporary arrangements for home, office, weddings and events, with a strong funeral strand covering Erdington, Kingstanding, Perry Common and Great Barr as well as Sutton itself. It is competent, conventional work at fair prices. What it is not is visible: the website is thin, there are no published prices, and the shop still runs on an aol.com email address, which is either charming or a warning depending on how you need to order.

Trading hours are 9am to 5.30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 9am to 5pm on Wednesday and Saturday, closed Sunday. Delivery covers Sutton Coldfield, Wylde Green, Erdington, Kingstanding, Perry Common and Great Barr. The shop describes itself as using only the best quality materials and flowers and offering a bespoke service, and it maintains per-area pages for the northern suburbs it serves.

Best for

Funeral and sympathy work in the northern suburbs, where four decades of local relationships mean the shop knows the churches, the crematoria and the directors involved.

What I would order

Phone the shop and let them advise. There is no useful online ordering and no price list, so the conversation is the transaction. Ask what they can do for your budget rather than asking for a named bouquet.

Worth knowing

The Wednesday and Saturday hours are half an hour shorter than the rest of the week, which is easy to miss. The website is thin with no prices and no cut-off published, and there is no stated position on seasonality or sourcing at all.

Forty-two years at one address on the Birmingham Road, still in the same family.

Who it is not for

Anyone who wants to order online with published prices. Wildwood Florist at Four Oaks is three miles north and publishes prices, hours and cut-offs properly.

How it compares

Williams Florist in Erdington is the only shop in the northern half of the city with a longer record, at over ninety years, and it publishes even less. Between them they hold most of north Birmingham's institutional flower memory.

Getting there

On the A5127 Birmingham Road at Wylde Green, two minutes from Wylde Green station on the Cross City line, with parking on the surrounding roads. Straightforward to reach by train or car.

Where this assessment comes from

Desk research only. The 1984 founding, family ownership, hours and address are taken from the shop's own pages and corroborated by directory listings. The quality claims are the shop's own. Low scores on ordering and green reflect what is not published rather than what is known to be poor.

Sources consulted: The business's own website, contact page and per-area pages for Erdington, Kingstanding and Great Barr, plus Florist Central's B72 1AX listing and the Roses Florist network delivery pages that reference it.
