Why there are so many
This is the largest section of the list, with eleven shops, and it covers the widest range of anywhere in the city. The Coventry Road and Stratford Road corridors run for miles through Yardley, Sheldon, Sparkhill and Hall Green, and almost every mile of them supports a florist. Joan's has been on the Coventry Road since 1966. Urban Design on the Stratford Road has fifty years and a Chelsea gold medal behind it. Shellies and Beaufort in Sheldon are both long-established Interflora shops working the airport side of the city.
The other thing happening out here is the Asian wedding trade, and it is substantial. Around Alum Rock and Washwood Heath, Petals of Madinah and D Florist work a market with completely different expectations of scale, colour and price from anything in Edgbaston, as does Ever So Special in Sparkhill. Most Birmingham florist round-ups ignore this entirely, which tells you more about the round-ups than about the shops.
Getting around, and what it costs
Buses, mainly. The 11 outer circle and the Coventry Road and Stratford Road services cover nearly all of it, and Acocks Green, Tyseley, Hall Green and Small Heath have stations. Most of these shops have parking outside or nearby, which is not something you can say about the city centre. This is the cheapest part of Birmingham to buy flowers. Fiesta in Acocks Green starts at thirty-four pounds fifty, and around Alum Rock you can buy well for less than that if you know what you are asking for.
