Why there are so many

Sutton Coldfield is a town that Birmingham absorbed in 1974 and which has never entirely agreed to the arrangement. It has its own high street, its own affluent fringe at Four Oaks, and a florist economy that behaves like a market town rather than a suburb: fewer walk-ins, more standing orders, and a lot of funeral work for the surrounding parishes. Wildwood on Belwell Lane and Wylde Green Florist, family run since 1984, are the two shopfronts that anchor it, with Studio Blooms and Floral Jazz working from studios nearby.

South and west of Sutton the character changes completely. Great Barr, Kingstanding and Handsworth are dense, mixed and price-sensitive, and the shops reflect it. Roses Florist and Bloomin Lovely are Great Barr neighbourhood shops. Joanne's in Kingstanding runs a tea room alongside the flowers, which is not a gimmick so much as an honest response to a high street that needed two reasons to stop. Flower Shop Birmingham on the Soho Road serves one of the most diverse stretches of retail in the country.

Getting around, and what it costs

The Cross City line runs to Wylde Green, Sutton Coldfield and Four Oaks, and Handsworth and Perry Barr are on the Walsall line, so most of this page is reachable by train. Parking is genuinely easy here compared with anywhere else in this guide, which is part of why the Sutton shops keep their local trade. Prices split cleanly along the same line as the character: Four Oaks and Sutton sit near the city average, Great Barr and Kingstanding sit below it.
