hedge is the best-looking shop on this list, and it is only incidentally a florist. It opened on the Pershore Road in 2017, at the point when Stirchley was turning from a row of shuttered units into the most interesting independent high street in south Birmingham, and it sells flowers alongside clothing, beauty, homeware, cards, jewellery and children's things. The strapline is lovely shop, lovely things, lovely flowers, in that order, and the order is honest. The reason it earns a place here rather than being dismissed as a gift shop with buckets is that the floristry is real. There are wedding packages at three tiers, bespoke, à la carte and petite, which is a more thoughtful structure than most dedicated florists offer, plus funeral work and a flower club subscription. Pricing the wedding offer in tiers is a small kindness to couples who do not want a consultation and cannot afford a full design service. The catch is availability, and it is a serious one. hedge opens Wednesday to Saturday, ten until four. That is twenty-four trading hours a week, less than half what most shops on this list manage, and it means the shop is shut for the entire first half of the week. Turn up on a Monday with a crisis and you will find a closed door and a very nice window.
