Clare-Zoe

Publishes its delivery fees, which most of this guide does not.

The verdict

Clare-Zoe does one thing that almost no other florist in this guide does: it tells you what delivery costs before you order. Four pounds locally and in Sutton Coldfield, eight pounds for the wider Birmingham area, published plainly. That is a small piece of honesty with an outsized effect, because delivery charges are where flower buying most often turns out to cost more than the advertised price, and the trade has largely decided not to mention them until checkout. The shop is on Mason Road in Erdington and covers a wide north eastern catchment: Erdington, Sutton Coldfield, Four Oaks, Tamworth, Lichfield, Castle Vale, Castle Bromwich and out towards Solihull. There is a loyalty points scheme, which is another small sign of a business thinking about repeat customers rather than one-off transactions. The hours are the awkward part and they are unusual enough to write down: nine to two on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, eight to three on Thursday and Friday, eight to two on Saturday. Early starts, early finishes, and different every few days. Beyond that, the work is conventional, nothing is published about sourcing or seasonality, and the range is narrower than the larger Erdington shops. The virtue here is transparency about money, not ambition about flowers.

Trading hours are 9am to 2pm Monday to Wednesday, 8am to 3pm Thursday and Friday, and 8am to 2pm on Saturday, closed Sunday. Delivery is £4 locally and to Sutton Coldfield and £8 across the wider Birmingham area, with collection also available. The offer covers bouquets, arrangements, funeral flowers, wedding flowers and corporate event work, with a loyalty and rewards scheme for registered customers. The strapline is flowers with love.

Best for

Anyone who wants to know the full cost before ordering, and anyone in the north east of the city sending to the Tamworth, Lichfield or Castle Bromwich fringe where the wider Birmingham rate still applies.

What I would order

Order online where the delivery fee is stated, and check which band your postcode falls into before you commit. If you can collect, do: the shop opens at eight on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Worth knowing

The hours change three times a week and every day ends early, with a 2pm close on Monday to Wednesday. Nothing is published about sourcing or seasonality, and the range is modest against the bigger shops nearby.

Publishes flat delivery fees, £4 locally and £8 across Birmingham, which is rare here.

Who it is not for

Anyone needing a late afternoon collection. Eros Flowers at Hodge Hill is three miles south and open until seven.

How it compares

Clover Blooms at Castle Bromwich is the other local shop that publishes real numbers, in its case funeral tribute prices. Between them they are the two most financially transparent florists in this half of the city.

Getting there

Mason Road, Erdington, close to Erdington station on the Cross City line and on the bus routes towards Castle Vale. There is parking on the surrounding roads.

Where this assessment comes from

Desk research only. Hours, delivery fees, coverage and the loyalty scheme are taken directly from the shop's published pages. No founding date is published. The scores on range and green reflect what is absent from the published record.

Sources consulted: The business's own website and its Birmingham flower delivery page carrying the hours, delivery fees and coverage, plus Sutton Coldfield and Erdington florist directory listings.
